“Where do one go after they die? Does their soul wander on Earth aimlessly not knowing that they are no longer alive, or do they finally accept and come to terms with their own death?”
These are usually common questions that ponder upon our mind be it when we are children or currently, as an adult. It is something that keeps playing in our mind whenever we attend any funerals. At some point, it hits harder when the funeral is someone that we have known for a long time – specifically someone that we love. It is so hard to imagine where they will go next now that they are no longer with us. Will they feel any pain? Or are they much happier now that they no longer need to succumb to the earthly matters?
Transcending the religions, each have their own belief about the afterlife. For the Christians for example, they believe that human’s soul does not remain on Earth. Instead, as soon as they die, their soul will ascend straight for Judgement. This aligns with what Paul says in Philippians (1:23–24); that it would have been better for him to leave and be with Christ than it was for him to stay here for us although it is needful. Basically, he's saying that when we die, our souls go straight to be with Christ.
However, in the middle state, our minds are not physically present. We won't have bodies that are perfect until Christ comes back and the great resurrection happens. Only after that, our souls will join our bodies again and become complete again.
Buddhism, on the other hand, prefers a different outlook of death in their religion. For them, life and death are two ends of a spectrum, and life also doesn't start when you are born nor does it end when you die. Our spirit will still be there and look for us through the need to connect with a new body and a new life. They will be born where they did in the past because of their actions, both good and bad. Their karma is also a result of their actions.
This would cause the person to be reborn in one of six realms: heaven, humans, Asura, the hungry ghost, animals, or hell. Realms, depending on how bad your karma was. However, Buddhists think that none of these places are final and that you don't stay in any one place forever. We can say that in Buddhism, life doesn't end; it just continues in different ways that are caused by past actions. The idea behind Buddhism is that all lives, including the one we are living now, are temporary. So, we shouldn't be afraid of death because it leads to rebirth.
Really, the idea of afterlife is often more than not, so scary to think about particularly due to it being unknown. However, despite that, it is vital to remember that we need to saviour our current life to the fullest and enjoy everything to its fullest without thinking too much of what’s ahead when we die. It is enough that we live the life that is full of kindness so that we’ll be remembered for our deeds.
